Tiny Texas Houses and owner Brad Kittel will be hosting this event and educating attendees on the Salvage Mining “Teardown Process.”
You’ll get hands-on experience and learn a vast array of salvage mining skills including:
- How to identify materials and value them
- The Salvage Mining Process (from “Cherrypicking” to Transporting & Storing)
- How to remove doors and windows safely from other structures
- How to use your tools effectively to not damage materials
- How to De-nail wood safely and efficiently (And using a modern pneumatic “Nail Kicker”
- Safety Precautions and Salvage Mining Tips
- The experience of a life time with the chance to meet like-minded friends!

This particular house is being called “The Ugly Duckling” because its an old beat-up ranch house that Tiny Texas Houses will transform into one, most likely even two, of their beautiful and unique tiny house designs.
The House measures about 15×30 and is a great example of the kinds of structures littered all over this country just waiting to be salvaged and re-purposed! You’ll learn everything you’ll need to know to get out in the field and do-it-yourself by the time this bootcamp is complete.
Tickets are on sale now for just $175 for single person admission and $275 for couples (this is the early bird special which will end February 1st, 2014). Regular prices will be $200 per person and $325 per couple.

How does the seminar work?
Attendees will arrive at Tiny Texas Houses facility in Luling, Texas the afternoon of Friday February 28th no later then 5:00pm. A guided tour will be given through our Tiny Texas Houses facility which will show you our Tiny Houses under development and the many applications we utilize salvaged materials for. The evening will be for meeting and greeting other attendees and the Tiny Texas Team. Sleeping arrangements will be available for all attendees (described below) or you are welcome to utilize the local motels and hotels of Luling, Seguin and Lockhart, Texas.
Saturday Morning attendees will drive to the ranch location (about 20 minutes from Luling, Texas) (Transportation not provided) where we will give an overview and run down of the site and days schedule and goals. We will begin work taking down the structure no later then 11:00am on Saturday Morning. All Attendees are asked to be present.
We will break for lunch (not provided – sack lunch recommended) or someone will run to the local taco restaurant for tacos, and then we will continue working into the evening. Each evening we will return to the Tiny Texas Houses facility for rest and begin the next day. The bootcamp is scheduled to run from Friday- Sunday with a Q&A session Sunday Evening. We usually work until dusk each day.
This will be a hands on event in which you will be removing nails and pulling apart an old structure. The work can be strenuous and labor intensive. Whilst attendees are not expected to work (you can just watch) we encourage all participants to get hands-on experience and to do the work!
We will be working in an old structure with no electricity. Conditions could be hot and dirty. All Attendees must sign the liability waiver (available for download after purchase) and present it before stepping foot in the work environment. All attendees are responsible for their own actions and Tiny Texas Houses is not responsible for any accidents or injuries.
What to Bring:
Because you will be in a work environment with power tools and the like, we ask that you dress appropriately. All attendees should wear:
- Good Work Pants
- Long Sleeve Shirt (optional)
- Closed Toe Shoes – Preferably hard toe with a heavy sole (This helps nails from piercing your boots)(No sandals!)
- Dust Mask (provided) (respirators recommended for those with respiratory issues or immune system weaknesses)
- Safety Goggles
Tiny Texas Houses will provide all the necessary tools to complete the job, but attendees are encouraged to bring their own set of hand tools (be sure to mark them so they do not get mixed up). Attendees are encouraged to bring:
- A Tool Belt (this makes life so much easier!)
- Crow Bar
- Screwdrivers (flathead and phillips)
General Recommended Supplies:
- Your own sleeping gear (sleeping bags, cot, pillows, etc)
- Flash Light
- Plenty of Water, Snacks, and Food!
AND YOUR LIABILITY WAIVER!!! (available for download after purchase)
NO one will be allowed on site for salvage or on TTH property for a seminar without signing the Liability Waiver.
Attendees are welcome to stay at the Tiny Texas Houses facility each evening during the 3 day bootcamp. There will be plenty of indoor/ climate controlled spaces to sleep. Overnight stays in some select Tiny House Designs may be available (TBA). Tiny Texas Houses is on a large piece of property, so attendees are also welcome to bring their camper trailers, but there will not be hookups available.
If attendees wish to stay on the teardown location site each evening, they may, but primitive camping is all that is available. Attendees are encouraged to return to Tiny Texas Houses each evening for group socialization and continuing education with the Tiny Texas Team.
Bathrooms will only be available at The Tiny Texas Houses facility. Showers will be available at our facility as well.
Attendees are free to come and go from the facility and bootcamp as they please. If you would like to reserve a hotel in the nearby cities of Luling and Lockhart you may do so at your own accord.
For those staying at Tiny Texas Houses each evening bring your own sleeping supplies such as:
- Blow Up Mattresses
- Cots, Etc
We may have a few of the Tiny Houses available to rent for the night for the participant but final announcements for them will not come until February 5th.
Meals are not included in the bootcamp ticket price. Each attendee is responsible for their own food and refreshments during the course of the bootcamp.
The Tiny Texas Houses team may prepare a macro biotic and organic meal at our facility for attendees on Saturday Night. Attendees are asked to contribute $10.00 for the meal if it does occur.
Tiny Texas Houses may pick up breakfast tacos for those who partake each morning as well. Again, attendees must pay for their own meals.

9:00am – Wake up, Breakfast, and ready supplies and team
10:00am – Head to teardown location.
11:00am – Tour structure. Go over game plan. Begin teardown.
12:30pm – Lunch Break
1:30pm – Resume teardown
Dusk – Clean Up Site. Q&A Session
Evening – Return to Tiny Texas Houses for fun, games, and socializing. We may even have a possible campfire at the amphitheater depending on the crowd and weather each evening.

Note: Because of the large number of entries we have for these positions, only five will be selected. Volunteers will be given duties and assignments each day and will be assisting the Tiny Texas Team in whatever ways needed.
In the event of bad weather the Bootcamp will be re-scheduled for the following weekend (March 7th-9th, 2014). If you unable to attend a re-schedule you will be refunded in full.
Full refunds will be given up until February 15th, 2014, after which any cancellations are non-refundable.
